How will I know if my child’s speech is ready for kindy?

Our Brisbane north kids speech pathologists are often asked – ‘How do I know if my child is ready for kindy?’ and ‘what skills should they have before they start?’

Research says that before your child starts kindergarten they should be able to follow instructions with more than one part, and should be speaking clearly 75 percent of the time – meaning their words and ideas should be easy to understand.

More than this, they should be able to tell you about their day, answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions and should be asking increasingly complex questions to learn about new ideas.

You should find that your little one is able to learn words easily and they should know the names of common everyday objects. Shared book reading should be fun and engaging, and little ones ready for kindy should be able to answer questions about a story they have just read.

To support their peer relationships, children entering kindy should be using their words to play and negotiate with other children.

Finding and treating any difficulties as early as possible gives our little ones the best chance at kindy and prep!

If you are concerned about your child’s ability in any of these areas, or are hoping to have a general check-up, contact the clinic today to see how our kids speech pathologists can help.
