Tips to get the most out of your child’s occupational therapy

All child occupational therapy sessions are created equally – or are they? There are tips and tricks you can use to ensure that your little one is getting the most out their therapy time with the Cooee Speech Pathology team in Brisbane north.

With therapy only lasting for 30 minutes per week, it is so important to make sure that we make the most of our precious time together. Some things to think about as you prepare for your next child occupational therapy session:

  • Food – hungry tummies can lead to restless bodies and minds! Make sure that your little one has had a snack before they come into the therapy room. That little bit of food can make the world of difference for their attention and engagement.
  • Sleep – our therapy is fun, but it is still demanding. Being rested will help with endurance and resilience.
  • Play – if your little one is wriggly, spend some time playing at the park or in the backyard before coming to therapy. Movement is a great way to get the body ready for learning.
  • Homework – the more you practice, the easier something becomes. Preparation and practice between sessions is the key to success. It can be hard for a little one to perform during therapy sessions if they haven’t had a chance to practice their skills since their previous session.
