Easter Activities for Kids: Build Language & Fine Motor Skills Through Cooking

Home follow-up tasks from your Occupational Therapist (OT) or Speech Pathologist can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news? Many therapy goals can be practised naturally during everyday routines.

With Easter coming up, Easter cooking activities for kids are a fun, engaging way to support both speech and language development and fine motor skills at home.

At Cooee Speech Pathology & Occupational Therapy Brisbane, we love helping families turn everyday moments into powerful learning opportunities.

Why Easter Cooking is Great for Child Development

Cooking together is one of the best home therapy activities for kids because it supports:

  • Language development (talking, listening, understanding)
  • Fine motor skills (hand strength, coordination)
  • Following instructions
  • Social interaction and turn-taking

What is Language Development?

Language is the system of words, sentences, and grammar we use to share and understand messages.

Children develop language through:

  • Listening
  • Playing
  • Interacting with others
  • Everyday routines like cooking

What are Fine Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills involve coordinating the small muscles in the hands, wrists, and fingers.

These skills are essential for:

  • Eating
  • Dressing
  • Writing
  • Playing

Children with reduced fine motor skills may find everyday tasks more challenging.

How to Practise Speech & Language During Easter Cooking

During fun Easter baking activities, use these evidence-based speech strategies:

1. Labelling

Name objects and actions
👉 “This is chocolate” / “We are mixing”

2. Recasting

Repeat your child’s sentence with correct grammar
👉 Child: “me mix” → Adult: “I am mixing the chocolate”

3. Narration

Talk through what you and your child are doing
👉 “We are rolling the dough into balls”

4. Modelling

Use slightly longer sentences than your child
👉 “We are putting the eggs on the tray”

5. Choice Questions

Offer choices to encourage communication
👉 “Do you want strawberries or bananas?”
